On Conflicting Drow Lore

Postby Rhicora Sat Aug 26, 2017 6:35 pm

Drow of the Underdark 3e isn't considered canon of the Forgotten Realms. It doesn't have the Forgotten Realms logo on it, and it's our understanding that it was written without any familiarity in the FR setting. While it might provide some interesting inspiration, it shouldn't be held up as a solid example when faced with FR-specific lore or house lore we've written.

Here are some common misconceptions:

- Spiders are regularly eaten and there is no prohibition on killing them
- The lowest female is held in greater prestige to the highest-ranking male
- The House Masters, the head of the fighters and wizards, are listed as always male
- The significance of the pantheon outside of Lolth is minimized

Here's our actual stance, based on Forgotten Realms sourcebooks:

- Spiders are revered as taking the likeness of the Spider Queen, and it is blasphemous for Lolthites to kill them
- Men of a higher rank within a House have power and influence, enough that low-ranking women might think twice before challenging them
- House Masters are sometimes female, though most women of noble birth are encouraged to train in the temple
- Vhaeraun and Eilistraee are alive and active, with cults of Ghaunadaur and Kiaransalee present in the setting
